Upsets Galore: 2018 Winter Futsal Finals Wrap

Three of the four teams that finished the Futsal Winter fixture season as Premiers were forced to watch on as their opponents accepted the Grand Final Champions trophies. Only in the Under 9s did the trophy go to its ‘rightful’ heir.

In the Under 9s, Black Thunder 5 defeated Red Devils 1 in a game which revealed great players to come via the skills they are developing. The Best Player of the Final trophy and Sports Power voucher went to Panther Sam Raciti who not only put two into the net but was also pivotal in defence and attack with his passing. Red Devil Ellen Rolfe (watch out for this one in future soccer and futsal) won the Sorenson Medal for the Most Valuable Player of the season….for the third time!

Goal scorers: Black Panthers: Sam Raciti, Jack Zappala 2, Own Goal 1. Red Devils: Ellen Rolfe 1

Under 12 season Premiers Futsal Freaks were the first team to be toppled in the Grand Finals. They went down to Ninja Knights 6 to 5 in a fast-paced game that went goal for goal until the Freaks ran out of time. Both these teams are very strong and their ability to pass the ball around and get into a scoring position is remarkable. There was a couple of fine solo efforts such as Freak Flynn Hyde and Ninja Gus Rolfe both dodging opposition players down the wing and then cutting in to score. Ninja Kayde Cummings effected a cracking goal from outside the D – just like his older brothers. Freaks goalkeeper Alistair Hickey was awarded the Best Player of the Final trophy and Sports Power voucher for his consistently good work and fine saves. Freak Rhys Johnstone won the Sorenson Medal for the Most Valuable Player of the season….also for the third time!

Goal scorers: Ninja Knights: Kayde Cummings, Alex Mirotsis 2, Gus Rolfe, Harrison Brotherton 1. Futsal Freaks: Rhys Johnstone 2, Flynn Hyde, Kelby Cifuentes, Kobi Johnston 1.

The Mixed Grand Final between Season Premiers Athletic Llamas and Blue Label was, as they say in the classics, a doozy! It was 4-4 at Full Time and 5-5 at the end of Extra time so the game entered the Golden Goal period. Less than a minute in, Blue Label goalkeeper Egan Graham delivered a missile shot at goal which went the length of the court and ricocheted off the Llama goalkeeper’s hand into the net. Blue Label 6, Athletic Llamas 5. Dave Cassels put in another fine performance, notching up 4 of his team’s 5 goals and being the main driver of their comeback in the second half and extra time. Bodhi “Preacher” Peacey slotted two cracking goals from difficult angles for the Blue Label.

A highlight of the game was watching a youthful team of high school students coming through to strongly challenge a highly successful team of experienced adult players.

Theresa Barletta, a consistently highly effective player throughout her futsal career, was no surprise to take home the Best Player of the Final trophy and accompanying Sports Power voucher. Theresa also received the Sorenson Medal for the Most Valuable Player of the season.

Goal scorers: Blue Label: Bodhi Peacey 3, Egan Graham, Theresa Barletta, Joson Curcio 1.

Athletic Llamas: Dave Cassels 4, Rory Degnian 1.

The Mens Grand Final was a game that was comprised mostly of past and present Atherton Eagles senior soccer team members pitched against one another, as well as family members. This set up a game that was highly skilled, highly entertaining and highly respectful. Season Premiers B.O.C. went down to Balls & Wieners in a game where the scoreline of 10-3 did not match the intensity and closeness of the game. B.O.C. star player Glen Garde suffered an ankle injury which slowed him down for a good part of the game. but it was the cut and thrust of ‘Mr Magic’ Joson Curcio providing the pivot from which B&W attacked through Bodhi Peacey and Blaire Duesbury’s goal scoring capabilities that sealed B.O.C.’s fate.  Joson took home the Best Player of the Final trophy and accompanying Sports Power voucher. Glen Garde received the Sorenson Medal for the Most Valuable Player of the season.

Goal scorers: Balls & Wieners: Bodhi Peacey, Blaire Duesbury 3, Ayden Wilkinson 2, Joson Curcio, Cory Curcio 1.

B.O.C.: Jamie Cuda, Glen Garde, Zack Wilkinson 1.
